Total organic carbon analyzer measurement principle

The sample is sparged with a carrier gas, which removes inorganic carbon and dissolved carbon dioxide. The residual liquid, now containing only organic carbon compounds, is pumped into the reactor. High-intensity UV light promotes organic carrier gas into the bottom of the reactor, forcing carbon dioxide through a drying system and into a non-scattering infrared carbon dioxide detector. The total amount of carbon dioxide produced is proportional to the organic carbon content in the sample, and the total organic carbon content should be within the set measurement range. For some higher TOC values or applications containing high concentrations of inorganic carbon, the use of acidified reagents can improve the measurement.
